Discovering the Joy of Woodpeckers and More at Sandy's Up-North Sanctuaries

If you’ve ever paused mid-conversation to listen to the rhythmic tap-tap-tap echoing through the trees… you already understand the magic.

At Sandy’s Up-North Sanctuaries, birdwatching isn’t just an activity — it’s an experience. Nestled in Northern Michigan near the Skidway Lake and Rifle River area, our peaceful wooded properties are home to six species of woodpeckers and more than a dozen additional birds throughout the year.

Whether you’re staying at Happy Camper or Hilltop Glamping, every sunrise and sunset brings a new feathered surprise.

So grab your binoculars — let’s explore.

Meet the 6 Types of Woodpeckers You’ll Spot Here

Woodpeckers are some of the most fascinating birds to watch. Their unique behavior and vibrant colors make them stand out in any forest setting. If you want more information on any of the birds, simply click their name or picture. It will take you to Cornell Lab of Ornithology (the scientific study of birds) which is part of Cornell University.

At Sandy's Up-North Sanctuaries, you can expect to see these six types:

The smallest woodpecker in North America, the Downy, is compact, energetic, and frequently seen darting along thinner branches. Look for the black-and-white spotted back and petite bill. They’re common year-round visitors to our feeders.

Often confused with the Downy, the Hairy Woodpecker is larger with a noticeably longer bill. Their loud drumming carries beautifully through the forest — a true Up-North soundtrack.

The showstopper. With its striking red crest and crow-like size, spotting a Pileated Woodpecker is unforgettable. When one lands near your cabin, you’ll know it.

These birds drill tidy rows of sap wells in trees. Their subtle yellow wash and red forehead make them easier to identify once you know what to look for.

Unlike other woodpeckers, flickers often feed on the ground for ants. Their spotted chest and red neck patch are stunning against the forest floor.

Despite the name, it’s the vibrant red cap and their zebra-striped back that catch your eye first. They’re frequent and bold visitors.
